Latin Teacher Grades 6-9

Fairfield Country Day School seeks applicants for the position of Latin Teacher for grades 6-9. Candidates should have a passion for teaching, a strong command of Latin, and experience teaching middle school children. The successful candidate will possess excellent content knowledge; a passion for working in an all-boys environment; creativity and a sense of humor; a high level of energy and flexibility; and a growth-oriented mindset.
She or he will be able to inspire and empower students to learn; collaborate and engage in daily conversations and experiences with students and colleagues; possess excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills; and commit to ongoing professional development and lifelong learning.
  • Build upon an established Latin program in grades 6-9.
  • In partnership with the World Language Department, develop appropriate curriculum and lessons to prepare all students for Upper School language classes.
  • Provide classroom experiences that are developmentally, linguistically and culturally age- appropriate for the children served.
  • Assess student progress and adjust teaching plans accordingly; provide students with regular and timely feedback about their progress.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to design interdisciplinary and project-based learning curricular experiences.
  • Actively pursue professional development in the teaching of foreign language, teaching with technology and/or teaching in interdisciplinary project-based approaches
  • Maintain strong communication with colleagues, families, and administration.
  • 6th grade homeroom teacher/advisor preferred.
  • Middle School coaching preferred.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Bachelor’s Degree and course work in related field; Master’s Degree preferred
  • Fluency in Latin
  • Minimum 2-5 years of teaching experience
  • Strong content knowledge in all relevant areas as well as background, beyond the language, in cultural traditions and history of the Classical Era
  • The ability to teach language through communication, culture, connections, comparison, and communities
  • Creative, energetic, and positive approach to teaching
  • Demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive classroom community and to working actively to introduce students to diverse cultures, experiences, and perspectives
  • Experience with student-centered teaching, project-based learning, interdisciplinary curriculum planning, and authentic measures of student learning
  • Experience integrating technology, including Google applications, laptop/iPads, SMART Board, etc., into teaching practice to support learning and deepen projects
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
