Tuition & Affordability

The Financial Aid Committee is guided by the school motto—
Laboribus Iudicamur, We are Judged By Our Deeds.
We are committed to an affordable private school tuition for families who put education first but would not be able to join us without Tuition Assistance.

We recognize that the cost of an FCDS education is a significant investment and our Tuition Assistance Program is designed to determine the options available to pursue our school. The award can vary from 2% up to 98% of tuition, depending on the family’s financial need. FCDS Financial Aid Committee invests in more than 20% of our student body totaling over $1.2 million in assistance.

Applying for an award has no bearing on assessments and decisions made by the FCDS Admissions Committee.

List of 10 frequently asked questions.

  • Q. Is Tuition Assistance available at FCDS?

FCDS awards $1.5 million annually to approximately 27% of our student body. The award can range from 2% of tuition up to 98% of tuition, depending on the family’s financial need. FCDS offers grant assistance to qualified students on the basis of the financial need of the family and the availability of funds. We realize that an FCDS education, while an excellent investment in your son’s future, represents an expense that is beyond reach for many families. We work hard to fund an award to make FCDS affordable for your son should he be accepted and you show need.
  • Q. What are the tuition and fees for the 2022-2023 school year?

    Tuition for 2022-23 is:
    • Kindergarten - $33,700
    • Grade 1 - $41,700
    • Grades 2-3 - $42,700
    • Grades 4-5 - $44,700
    • Grades 6-8 - $46,700
    • Grade 9 - $47,200
Fees include tuition, books, lunch, sports, arts, laptops, technology equipment, other activities, and tuition refund and accident insurance. Charges for field trips, personal athletic equipment, after school and other incidentals are billed separately during the year.
  • Q. How does someone apply for an award?

The first step in the process is to indicate on the Admissions application that you are applying for an award. Our Director of Finance and Operations will contact you with instructions and to help you through the process. Essentially you need to complete an application at www.sssbynais.org. It is advantageous to apply early in the Admissions process.
  • Q. Does applying for an award have an impact on my admission decision?

Award decisions and Admissions decisions are made by separate committees. Applying for tuition assistance does not influence a candidate’s selection for admissions to FCDS. We encourage families to apply early because the tuition assistance budget is not limitless.
  • Q. How will FCDS assess my family’s financial needs?

FCDS uses School and Student Services (SSS), a division of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), to help determine a family’s financial need. Applicants complete the Parents Financial Statement (PFS) which is completed online through the SSS web site. Your Federal IRS tax forms and W2 forms need to be uploaded as part of the application. Please note that while FCDS uses SSS as an important guide in the financial aid process, a family’s actual award can be recalculated to reflect the cost of living in Fairfield County or if there are unique financial circumstances. All awards are distributed by the Business Office at FCDS. For more information directly from SSS, call 800-344-8328 or visit their web site at: www.sssbynais.org.
  • Q. What is the timing of the tuition assistance process?

FCDS tries to distribute tuition assistance awards along with Admissions decision letters. The first round of Admissions decision letters are usually mailed in late February, therefore the process of applying for an award is best to be completed by December 31. Of course, if your family starts the admissions process late, we will work with you to try to get your application reviewed on a timely basis.
  • Q. What if our family is separated or I am a single parent?

Our students come from a variety of family situations. Each family’s situation is reviewed on an individual basis. In cases of divorce or separation, both the non-custodial parent and the custodial parent are required to provide financial information.
  • Q. What about tuition refunds?

If your son withdraws after the school yar is underway, the Tuition Refund Plan will pay benefits (subject to the terms of the policy and the amount insured) to the school, which provides substantial assistance in meeting your financial obligation.
  • Q. Will my son’s award change from year to year?

You will need to complete the application process every year.  Awards will remain approximately the same percentage of tuition each year as long as your family’s financial situation remains constant.
  • Q. Will our family have to pay back an award?

No. A family’s award from FCDS is considered a grant. Our program does not issue loans.
