The Lower School experience at FCDS is designed to provide each boy with the foundational skills and knowledge to become lifelong learners and leaders. Led by teachers who are experts in the art and science of teaching boys, our focus on relational learning ensures that every student feels empowered to take risks, be challenged, and develop deep confidence in their abilities.

Boys begin each day with a morning meeting which is designed to foster and promote friendship, empathy, and a collaborative learning community. Daily instruction in reading, spelling, writing, mathematics, and social studies are taught in both full classes and small groups and our dedicated learning specialists provide opportunities for differentiation and enrichment across the curriculum. Additional classes in physical education, science, art, music, Spanish, coding, and library complete our dynamic academic program.

Nurturing future leaders is core to the motto of our school, “We are judged by our deeds.” Even at the earliest age, our program emphasizes the development of leadership skills like teamwork, positive communication, fairness to classmates, accountability, and respect for the truth and teachers. Kindergarteners learn to confidently recite poems in front of the entire school while fifth graders become positive role models as our “Lower School Leaders.”
