Experiential Learning

FCDS believes that field trips provide beneficial experiences for boys of all ages and enhance their overall learning experience. There are two types of trips that an FCDS boy might experience during his tenure at the school: curriculum-related trips and character-building trips.
All trips are appropriate for the group attending. Teachers prepare students for the activities and provide guidelines for appropriate public behavior, reminding boys they are the school’s ambassadors during a field trip.

Expanding the Classroom
Curriculum-related field trips expand upon the classroom experience and may be designed to enhance material covered in class. Boys benefit from interactive learning, and many field trips provide an interactive environment. One of the purposes of our education here at FCDS is to foster a love of learning that extends beyond the classroom; field trips are an excellent way to do that. Boys from all grade levels participate in curriculum-related field trips.

Build Character
Character-building field trips are generally reserved for the older boys. Before classes begin, the boys in grades seven through nine travel with faculty members to one of several places for team work, problem solving, and group dynamics activities. These overnight trips allow boys to face numerous challenges and acquaint themselves with appropriate ways to navigate the intricate inner workings of the adolescent world, while also providing them with tools to build successful interpersonal relationships in the future.

The overnight field trips begin in sixth grade with a trip to explore science in nature. The seventh grade travels to the Adirondacks in the winter months to study the environment and outdoor survival skills. The eighth grade explores Boston and its rich history. A long-standing tradition for the ninth grade is a trip to the mountains of New Hampshire at the beginning of the school year and a trip to Miami and the Everglades in the spring. It is a capstone experience for the graduating class.

Founded in 1936 by Laurence W. Gregory, the school has admitted only boys since its inception.
