Educational Consultant, Derrick Gay, Visits FCDS

Molly Hemenway
Educational consultant Derrick Gay visited Fairfield Country Day School recently.
Derrick is an internationally recognized consultant to schools and educational organizations around the world on issues of diversity, inclusion, and global citizenship. Derrick collaborates with education thought leaders to foster empathy, enrich inclusion, and cultivate competency.

Derrick spoke with the parent body as well as members of our DIVE (Diversity Includes the Value of Everyone) student group which consists of seventh, eighth, and ninth grade boys. Derrick talked about how many parents “inadvertently prepare their child to live in the parents’ childhood world, rather than the 21st-century global society that the child will actually inherit.” He also spoke about the skills that will be necessary for today’s children to excel in the current global reality.  He spoke to the boys and parents about the necessity of communicating effectively across differences in order for our boys to become 21st century global citizens.  Our students and sons will go off to colleges and a professional environment that will be highly multicultural. There is a great need for both parents as well as educators to cultivate cultural competency in order to enhance the success of our boys in the 21st century.

One of the highlights of the night was listening to a speech on-line by Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who spoke at TedGlobal about “The Danger of a Single Story”. She spoke about how impressionable children are when hearing a story. The invaluable lesson is that “by only hearing a fraction of the truth (whether in the media, in school, or in popular culture), we are creating damaging misrepresentations. Show a people as one thing, as only one thing, over and over again and that is what they become.”
